Speakers:

Matthew Zampa (Partner at Zampa Debattista – Matthew is a Certified Public Accountant specialised in indirect taxation. Before founding Zampa Debattista, Matthew worked with a medium sized firm for just over two years and with Deloitte for five and a half years. He has been specializing in VAT since 2008 and has been involved in complex VAT assignments both within and outside of Malta. Matthew, a member of the Malta Institute of Accountants, also contributed to the first local VAT text book, “Principles of Maltese VAT Law”.

Stephen Balzan (Partner – Tax and Corporate Services at Act): Stephen is an accountant and a tax advisor. Main areas of interest include tax planning, capital gains and interpretation of double taxation agreements. He has over the past 24 years advised a number of foreign companies to relocate to Malta and benefit from the various fiscal advantages which Malta offers. He was actively involved in various committees in the fields of taxation and he has on a number of occasions lectured on topics related to international tax, both in Malta and overseas.

Justine Scerri Herrera (Lawyer at Michael Kyprianou & Co. LLC heading department dealing with Crypto, Blockchain & Fintech.): Justine is a warranted Maltese lawyer currently specialising in the Blockchain and Crytpocurrencies sector specifically in relation to advising clients (Issuers and Service Providers) on products, activities and licences related to the new Maltese VFA (Virtual Financial Assets) Regulations. Justine is heading the VFA & Fintech Department in Malta at an International Legal consultancy firm called Michael Kyprianou & co LL.C. The firm is Top ranked in The Legal 500 and according to Gold Magazine is the 4th Largest in size in Cyprus. Justine has developed a deep passion for this relatively new space and regularly publishes articles and speaks at international events. Justine possesses a varied legal background that empowers her to adopt a holistic approach to a whole spectrum of interlinked legal scenaria. She has experience in the Criminal Law field, Investment Services and Financial Services due to previous employment with a top Criminal Law firm, a leading Investment Services Firm (Exante) and an international Bank. Her favourite quote is ‘Knowledge is power’.

Dr Mario Zerafa (Associate at GANADO Advocates): Dr Zerafa is an Associate within GANADO Advocates’ Investment Services and Funds and Fintech teams. He primarily focuses on the setting up, structuring and licensing of all types of collective investment schemes as well as investment services licence holders. Mario also advises on the setting up of virtual financial assets service providers, including exchanges, brokers, managers and advisors. On an ongoing basis he advises clients on their ongoing obligations in terms of the applicable legal and regulatory framework. Mario specialises in AML-CFT laws and advises clients on the establishment of an AML-CFT framework in line with Maltese laws and regulations. He also lectures at various academic institutions on investment services and AML-CFT subjects.
